Capturing precious memories in PAINT…

20140329-152314.jpg

With the assistance of our average phone cameras these days, we’re easily able to capture special photos of loved ones including family, friends and pets – and holiday snaps too!

Have you ever considered having these photos transformed into paintings?  A favourite photo or memory captured forever in paint.

There are a number of artists on the island of Bali who do these. My all time favourite however, is Julio at Julio’s Art Gallery in downtown Legian.

He has artfully captured the essence of my children on canvas, from photo’s and I adore his ability.  I really do recommend Julio highly!

image  image

Just take a photo for him to paint and depending on workload, a painting will be ready in about 3-4 days.  They’re a  fabulous keepsake for your family and something that can be passed on for future generations.  I have seen family pets, loved ones who’ve passed, wedding moments and special family portraits there all captured by Julio in paint.

Examples of some of his in-shop art work below of well know celebs for sale…

Serious Shopper Alert!

image

Bali can offer a menagerie of shopping: from one-off designer items to market gear!

image

If you’re seeking bargain priced summer and beach fashions including great leather wallets and bags, dress jewellery and shoes, head to the markets at Seminyak (known as Seminyak Flea Markets).  Here you will find a good selection of market type purchases.

image

Although you may pay a little more than Kuta or Legian, the quality and design is often improved and more varied, and still at discount prices.

image

Don’t forget to bring a half empty suitcase to fit in all your purchases.

Happy shopping! Xx

Looking for a little Moroccan light….. or 3?

Lighting stores are popping up frequently in the tourist strip of Bali.

One such store is Suka Ashih Shop. It’s bursting at the seams with marvellous Moroccan lighting!

image

Wholesale and retail prices are available here.  They will also make to order.

image

It’s a little like an Aladdin’s cave of lighting where space is at a premium.  If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, so to speak and doing a little rummaging, you may well discover a special find here.

Happy shopping!!

FIXED PRICE Shopping Tip in Sanur:

TOOTSIES

image

If you want hassle-free bargain shopping in Sanur, head to “Tootsies”. Tootsies sell clothing for adults and kids, handbags, shoes, jewellery, quilts, sunglasses, table runners….and more.

The glass-fronted shop is air-conditioned and nicely set out.  It’s not huge but has a good selection and prices are very good.  In fact, you can use them as a guide for other non-fixed market shopping,  Eg,  Roxy/Quicksilver/Billabong jumbers $10Aus, Vans $10Aus, Nikes $15Aus, Sunglasses/hats $2.50Aus.

There are PLUS sizes available also.  If Tootsie has not got what you’re after, she will get it in for you.

The easiest way to find Tootsies is to take a taxi to Jl Pantai Sindhu.  Walk towards the beach and when you get to the path that runs parallel to the ocean, turn left. It’s about 100-150m along the path that you will see Tootsies Restaurant sign. Her shop is directly behind the restaurant and is over 3 shops

Address: Tootsie  No 28, Sindhu Beach market, Sanur

Phone: (0361) 285184

Where to purchase MANCHESTER bargains….

MANCHESTER BARGAINS

You will find manchester galore and service plus at Matahari Department store in Kuta Square.

Photo Above of Matahari Department store in Kuta Square

Towels, tablecloths, bathmats, sheet sets, pillows…… You just have to look to find what you’re after.  With so many 40 and 50% OFF SALES happening, it is not difficult to secure a “bargain”.

This store, along with Centro Department store in Discovery Mall, are  my “go to” for quality bedding.  High thread count bed sheets and pillow cases can be purchased here at much reduced prices to what you would pay back home.   I also purchase luxurious pillows for sleeping here.  Again the quality is superb and the prices ridiculous eg. the quality of bed pillows that would sell for around $200-plus each in Australia, I purchase at approximately Rp400,000 each in Matahari or Centro.

Image

Photo above of Manchester Department in Centro, Discovery Mall

The sales people at these department stores are plentiful too.  (Myer and David Jones in Australia could take a leaf out of their book!)

*A word of warning with sheet sizes:  Do take your regular sizes from home and compare them with those written on the packets in Matahari since Indonesian sizes differ.   (I find that I can purchase King sheets that have more depth to the mattress, hence the fitted sheet has an easier fit to an Australian size mattress and the loose sheets too are more generous).

Image

HINT:  Watch the waves roll in over Kuta beach while you chill with a cool, cold drink at the restaurant on the same floor as Manchester in Centro at Discovery Mall, between shopping for bargains.

Happy Shopping!!

Bali Market Shopping and PRICE Guide

Market shopping

Bargaining – you either love  it or loathe it!

Either way, consider these tips:

  • keep smiling
  • never say this is your first trip to the island (even if it is)
  • have a clear price you are willing to pay before you start negotiating
  • be mindful that they do this for a living so are likely to be more skillful/persistent than you are
  • go early for best “Morning Price”
  • be prepared to walk away
  • if you think it’s a reasonable price, then do the deal
  • remember that 10,000Rp is equal to approximately $1.00Aus
  • watch the zero’s on your notes as it can be confusing.

Above all, always keep your sense of humour!!

Price information – as per current tripadvisor

FIXED PRICE market stalls in LEGIAN

If you are looking for no hassle FIXED PRICE market stall type gear in Legian head to either:

1.  Ketuts at Jl. Saha Dewa Gg. Sorga No 2 (Garlic Lane)  – this market stall is popular and gets VERY busy.  It is recommended you get there around 9am, when it opens.  The main items sold here are clothing & bags with a good selection of the typical in demand market gear. Numerous items are available for selection, with assistance from either Ketut or her family members who work there.  It does get hot in her stalls but a welcome free bottle of water is given when you arrive. Ketut also stocks 5 & 6 XL so it is popular among big western people.   There is also a fixed price store adjacent to Ketuts which sells a few homeware products eg. cushion covers and table runners, small stone plaques, aluminium silver goods.

2.  Miss Debbies on Sahaweda Street (Garlic Lane), Legian (opposite Ketut’s laneway) – There is a very good variety of goods here, including a fair selection of home-wares .  Go to the shopfront and they will take you down a nearby lane to her compound where she has goods well displayed in an open area on tables and in rooms.  Surprisingly, I have never seen Miss Debbies really busy so it’s a good location to browse at your leisure with often a cool breeze blowing through the compound to make for more comfortable shopping.  A welcome bottle of free water is also given here. (This is my FAVE fixed price shop!!)

3.  Turikas shop, Art Market Melasti St 45B Legian (corner of Melasti St and Garlic Lane).  A very obliging lady who is arguably not as well-known as Miss Debbies and Ketuts (above).  You can put in an order and pick it up in a day or two.  She will go out of her way to accommodate your needs and there is usually a good selection of clothes in her shop.

4.  Sita fashion, 373 Jalan Legian ( on the left between Melasti st and Padma st).  This shop sells a variety of items and again just saves you the hassle of having to negotiate at the typical market stalls,  Sold here are metal wall art eg. fish/geckos/birds etc to go on your wall, stone carvings, some jewellery, pottery vases, artwork as well as handbags.

5. Santa’s Shop,  A good selection of clothes here catering to most sizes. The shop is at the north end of Garlic Lane, beach side of the street, about 5 shops before the end.  Look out for the colourful, girl’s fairy dresses hanging out the front.  Address is : 23 Sahaweda St (Garlic Lane), Legian  (Closest to Padma Street end).  Phone is 081 7473 3463.

It has been said that comparisons have been made between market stall shopping, via negotiation and market shopping, via fixed price shops with the fixed price shops winning hands down in the time stakes.  It is a wonderful option (and often a relief!……lol)  to have these fixed price stores to attend for hassle-free shopping.

Happy shopping!
