Seminyak

Looking for a stylish drinks venue with breathtaking views?

SOS Rooftop Lounge & Bar

Image

This is a stylish and chic place with sensational views. The three or four times I have gone here have always been nothing short of impressive. Something so sophisticated is not so common in Bali.

Image

Service is responsive and punctual, the food is of a high quality and the atmosphere is quite swish. Somewhat surprising is the fact that the crowds vary: sometimes busy with little room to sit and other times a little empty. (Worst case scenario is that you enjoy a fabulous view of the sunset, with delish food and cocktails, then move on to a more “happening” place – there are so many nearby in Seminyak).

The cocktails aren’t the cheapest but who cares when the view and overall ambience is mostly priceless.

Image

If you get peckish, the tapas menu is a little limited but the cocktails are so good you’ll have to remind yourself to slow down – which could be why they deliver complimentary olives and nuts to your table upon arrival, which is a nice touch.

Image

Situated on the 4th floor, rooftop of the Anantara Hotel in Seminyak, this signature lounge is arguably the highest point in Seminyak .  It’s highly recommended for sunset drinks or to just enjoy the day or night vista up and down the coastline.  No matter what the time, the view is quite breathtaking.

Image

Novel cocktails, tapas, grill and seafood are all served to perfection while guests can recline on oversized daybeds and listen to the latest in DJ choices.

Free WI-FI is available. Prices are expensive for Bali, but still cheaper than Australian prices.

Opening Hours:

4:00 pm – 11:00 pm (Sunday – Thursday)
5:00 pm – 12:00 am (Friday – Saturday)

Address: Anantara Seminyak Resort & Spa, Seminyak, Bali, Indonesia

Phone: +62 361 737773

HINT: If you’re travelling as a family leave the kids behind with a babysitter when you visit here because it’s ultra chic and probably not so child-friendly.

HINT 2: Note the opening hours!  The first time I attended, the SOS bar was closed as we had arrived too early.  No hardship though, we enjoyed a wine or 2 at the poolside bar, ground floor, overlooking the beach.  Bliss!!

On trend – stylish PIMENT ROUGE for homewares…

PIMENT ROUGE – Homewares

Image

When it comes to homewares, Bali is on trend. A few years ago, when building a new house in Australia, I topped up my container of imported goods with assorted purchases from the very stylish “Piment Rouge” homeware store. Unique decorator items are sold here including soft furnishings, bed linens and furniture.

Image

Bedside lamps, placemats and table runners, ornaments, vases, paintings and various unique items I had not seen elsewhere, I enthusiastically purchased at bargain basement prices. I am still so thrilled with the items – each holding a special memory of the time I sourced them.

Image

On each return trip to Bali, I never fail to stop in at Piment Rouge – usually on Monkey Forest Road, Ubud or Jalan Raya Seminyak.

Image

Pigment Rouge’s Factory showroom is at Jl. Serangan No 3, Pengubengan Kauh, Kerobokan, telephone: 0361 738 411. Retail stores include Jl. Raya Seminyak 60X, Seminyak; and Jl. Purabagus Taruna No 513, Legian.

Shops and factory:
– Boutique Legian :Jalan Pura Bagus Taruna 513, Legian Bali Tel : 751 783;
– Boutique Seminyak 1 : Jalan Raya Seminyak 60x, Seminyak Bali Tel : 730 432;

– Boutique Ubud : Jalan Monkey Forest, Ubud Bali Tel : 977 983

Are you cool enough for this coffee den?

SEA CIRCUS

Contrary to the name, there is no circus nearby, nor is the sea. This is a brightly coloured, quirky cafe positioned on a corner. It’s full of fun with attentive staff and plenty of interesting artifacts to look at while you sip “5 senses coffee”.

Image

Call me old fashioned, but the first time I attended the much coveted Sea Circus, I was taken aback when our cocktails arrived in “jam jars!” I soon adjusted though and realised this is part of the charm of this funky, rustic corner cafe.

Image Image

From relaxed family breakfasts (with exceptional coffee, healthy smoothies and an Eggs Benedict to wake up for!) to casual lunch and dinner dining with the freshest of ingredients and reasonable prices, this restaurant hits the mark.

Image

A chilled atmosphere – perfect for families or large groups.

Hint 1: It’s a small venue so best to book for a large group.

Hint 2: Try a DELISH mango margarita!

Suave, New York Style bar/restaurant with wicked cocktails!

MAMASAN

Image

Chef Will Meyrick has brought the same exacting standards from his flagship restaurant Sarong to this breezy, more casual second outpost. Decor is terrific, big pictures of Mamasan herself on the walls – very stylish. The music has always been excellent and I find myself returning frequently. The seating downstairs is fairly basic  (it works) – upstairs though is a selection of arm chairs, bar stools and more.  I prefer it!

Image

The food is a smorgasbord of Asian fusion delights with a focus on China, Thailand and Vietnam.  Faultless service, inventive, thoughtfully prepared dishes and a beautiful, hipster-chic decor combine to make this a remarkable dining experience. Too many standout dishes – to name however a few are: Vietnamese chicken and pomelo salad, Szechuan slow cooked beef short ribs and masalachai panna cotta, spicy beef dum sum, peking duck, pork belly, crispy duck curry, thai beef salad, crème brulee’ with coffee afogatto….. mmmm!  Try the tapas selection too – you won’t regret it!

Image

The service is fabulous and very high-end.  There is a decent wine list but the real deal is in the cocktails – just superb!

This bar and restaurant is a modern, sophisticated, luxury haven at super reasonable prices.

Mamasan delivers!!

HAVELI – A little treasure trove of extraordinary homewares…

HAVELI – Interior Decoration

Image

These two stores situated diagonally opposite each other on Jl. Seminyak, offer home-wares that are uniquely beautiful with a definite stylish, refined and elegant edge.

Bargain hunters will particularly LOVE the second of these stores since it’s a “factory outlet” type store where the prices are even fabber than the first!

These home-ware stores stock European, Moroccan and Asian combinations of tableware, linen, cushion covers, lamps, mirrors, stunning chandeliers, jewelry and accessories. Beautiful fabrics are made of taffeta, silk, satin, French linens and Indian saris – all in gorgeous jewel-like colours.

Image

If you adore home-wares as I do, it is a wonderful delight to find beautiful, unique items, without the designer price-tag, for your individual table settings, gifts for your gal pals or just distinctive items for your home.

Tres chic Pearl: a hidden gem!

PEARL Hotel, Legian

20130910-132423.jpg

Situated down a short driveway off busy Jalan Double Six, this charming boutique hotel is a delightful oasis of calm. There are only approximately 16 rooms wrapping around a modest azure pool in an intimate, tropical setting. Shaded day beds poolside, piled with cushions, are a restful place to relax with a cocktail or two.

The Pearl hotel has a NO child policy and there is NO swim up bar. This ensures a quiet and peaceful sanctuary.

20130910-132538.jpg

The hotel is conveniently located with the beach a pleasurable 5 minute stroll away in one direction and the wallet emptying shopping strip of Jalan Legian on the other.

I only stayed here one night as a last minute booking, but would happily return. The understated rooms are spacious and clean, though simply decorated. The bathrooms are generous, with some opening partially to the outdoors. Mozzies therefore can be an issue, so come prepared!

The gardens are pleasantly lush and typically Balinese.

20130910-132451.jpg

A simple, uncomplicated breakfast is included in the reasonable room cost. Breakfast can be delivered to your balcony, though there is no daily room service. Wifi is strong.

20130910-132525.jpg

Conveniently, the much coveted and well renowned French “Pearl Restaurant” is within the hotel grounds. An enchanting garden setting filled with fairy lights compliments the superb food with its outstanding presentation.

20130910-132517.jpg

I would recommend this hotel as a quiet, modest getaway. It is an ideal lady’s solo accommodation with secure, gated grounds and staff that are attentive and welcome you like family.

A little gem of a hotel!

HINT: Book an upstairs room if possible, as there is some noise on the ground floor from movement overhead.

Stylish Seminyak – the Rodeo Drive of Bali!

20130903-151232.jpg

Seminyak is every girls dream (and most men’s nightmare….lol). The strip of designer boutiques along Jalan Laksmana and Jalan Raya Seminyak are currently the fashion capital of Bali with beautiful, often unique items, at a fraction of the cost in Australia. You can easily spend hours shopping and most of the stores are close to each other.

From elegant to bohemian, free-flowing flimsy to figure hugging glamour, this shopping strip has it all!

20130903-151128.jpg

I usually find that there is no pressure from the sales assistants and yet they’re there to help if needed, the prices are attractive and the shops are air-conditioned.

Most boutiques are fixed price, but it doesn’t hurt to ask if they’re negotiable. Sometimes, I really do feel like I’ve come away with a “steal”.

20130903-151027.jpg

Amazing upmarket boutiques include:

Paul Ropp – 39 Jl Raya Seminyak: fun, bright, electric and unique

Uma & Leopold – 44B Jl Raya Seminyak: great colours, silhouettes and cool accessories

Magali Pascal – 177 Jl Laksmana: edgy, chic, young and glamorous

Lulu Yasmine – 100 Jl Laksmana: sophisticated, feminine, unique standout items

Lily Jean – 102 Jl Laksmana: for sexy statement pieces

Mist – 42 Jl Raya Seminyak : for flowy, pastal kaftans

Niconico Intimo – 12 Jl Raya Seminyak: for intimate ensembles and swimwear

20130903-151305.jpg

There are many more boutiques for you to see, but I have to leave a few surprises for you….

For bargains, head to Seminyak Square for el cheapo sunglasses, beads, bangles, big earrings, scarves and sandals. If you need a refreshing beverage or lunch, head into one of the little cafes there for some brief respite.

Hint 1: Early morning shopping means a special “morning price” and you will beat the heat.

Hint 2: For a little after-shop care, treat your feet to a quick “foot rejuvenation” at one of the many spa salons before heading back with your purchases.

Happy shopping! Xx

La de dah…. Kudeta!!

KUDETA

Such a cool place to dine, drink, people watch, enjoy the sunset or just while your time away.

I often go for breakfast which is so reasonably priced by Kudeta standards – a fresh juice and pancakes for approx. $12 or for $14 a fab eggs benedict, toast, fruit, juice & perfect coffee.

Comfy sun lounges with ocean views – adorable for rooftop sunset drinks.
A place to relax and refocus. I love this place!

Even the toilets are gorgeous…

Designer lighting at its best!

INSENS’O, the  lighting store

If you are looking for something authentic and exotic, then the lighting store INSENS’O may be for you.  The blend of classic and modern styles is inspiring.

INSENS’O is an extraordinary lighting store started by Italian born Roberto Tenace.  The story goes that he arrived in Denpasar in 2000 with only $100US in his pocket, fell in love with Bali, became a “lamp maker” (using natural, local materials) – and the rest is history!   He now employs 75 people in his Seminyak workshop.

If you’re updating your lighting at home or redesigning completely, do visit this store for inspiring lighting pieces.  You could seriously create and design a whole room around 1 lighting piece!

Fabulously unique, designer lighting at it’s best!!
