FIXED PRICE SHOPPING TIP:

Image

The ever popular Ketut’s Fixed Price shop in Legian is often crowded these days and you have to stand in line to be served.

You can easily bypass this however by shopping at Ketut’s Family Shop, run by her baby brother, Wayan!

Image

Ketut’s Family Shop is literally a short walk away and it amazes me that not many people know of it.

Image

Shopping here is a breeze!  There are no crowds and stock is plentiful.  Clothing, sunglasses, bags, belts, perfumes and even small toys are sold here by the helpful and always friendly, Wayan.  He will offer you bottled water, just as Ketut does (and has even been known to offer a Bintang!!)

Image

By shopping at Ketut’s Family Shop, you are continuing to support her family and benefiting from a trustworthy fixed price source.

  • Did you know that Ketut is one of 9 children?  (8 girls and 1 boy, Wayan).

*Please let Wayan know that Exclusively Bali referred you ~

Legian to Fine Bali Visitors who Give Money to Street Beggars Rp. 2 million

Time Out for Hand Outs

Cooperation between three local community elements in Bali has resulted in a new regulation intended to once and for all eliminate beggars from the beach and streets of Legian.

In the future those who hand money to street beggars are liable to a fine of Rp. 2 million (US$174).

Quoted in DenPost, the chairman of the Legian People’s Association (LPM), I Gusti Oka Wardana, said on April 28, 2014: “Beggars will always operate if people continue to give them money. If no one donates money to them, automatically the receivers (beggars) will disappear.”

Oka Wardana said it will take several months to socialize and make the new rule effective. Local community leaders will coordinate the publication of the new rules to accommodation providers in Legian who will, in turn, inform their guests.

Wardana is confident the new program will eliminate beggars in Legian.

Capturing precious memories in PAINT…

20140329-152314.jpg

With the assistance of our average phone cameras these days, we’re easily able to capture special photos of loved ones including family, friends and pets – and holiday snaps too!

Have you ever considered having these photos transformed into paintings?  A favourite photo or memory captured forever in paint.

There are a number of artists on the island of Bali who do these. My all time favourite however, is Julio at Julio’s Art Gallery in downtown Legian.

He has artfully captured the essence of my children on canvas, from photo’s and I adore his ability.  I really do recommend Julio highly!

image  image

Just take a photo for him to paint and depending on workload, a painting will be ready in about 3-4 days.  They’re a  fabulous keepsake for your family and something that can be passed on for future generations.  I have seen family pets, loved ones who’ve passed, wedding moments and special family portraits there all captured by Julio in paint.

Examples of some of his in-shop art work below of well know celebs for sale…

Sunset gazing at La Plancha…

Image

La Plancha is casual, sunset dining at its easiest.  Pull up a brightly-coloured bean bag and enjoy the view.  Simple, unpretentious Spanish food.  Be sure to arrive early to secure a seat as the bean bags are taken quickly.

A popular and arguably romantic beachfront location for sunset gazing over the Indian Ocean.

FIXED PRICE market stalls in LEGIAN

If you are looking for no hassle FIXED PRICE market stall type gear in Legian head to either:

1.  Ketuts at Jl. Saha Dewa Gg. Sorga No 2 (Garlic Lane)  – this market stall is popular and gets VERY busy.  It is recommended you get there around 9am, when it opens.  The main items sold here are clothing & bags with a good selection of the typical in demand market gear. Numerous items are available for selection, with assistance from either Ketut or her family members who work there.  It does get hot in her stalls but a welcome free bottle of water is given when you arrive. Ketut also stocks 5 & 6 XL so it is popular among big western people.   There is also a fixed price store adjacent to Ketuts which sells a few homeware products eg. cushion covers and table runners, small stone plaques, aluminium silver goods.

2.  Miss Debbies on Sahaweda Street (Garlic Lane), Legian (opposite Ketut’s laneway) – There is a very good variety of goods here, including a fair selection of home-wares .  Go to the shopfront and they will take you down a nearby lane to her compound where she has goods well displayed in an open area on tables and in rooms.  Surprisingly, I have never seen Miss Debbies really busy so it’s a good location to browse at your leisure with often a cool breeze blowing through the compound to make for more comfortable shopping.  A welcome bottle of free water is also given here. (This is my FAVE fixed price shop!!)

3.  Turikas shop, Art Market Melasti St 45B Legian (corner of Melasti St and Garlic Lane).  A very obliging lady who is arguably not as well-known as Miss Debbies and Ketuts (above).  You can put in an order and pick it up in a day or two.  She will go out of her way to accommodate your needs and there is usually a good selection of clothes in her shop.

4.  Sita fashion, 373 Jalan Legian ( on the left between Melasti st and Padma st).  This shop sells a variety of items and again just saves you the hassle of having to negotiate at the typical market stalls,  Sold here are metal wall art eg. fish/geckos/birds etc to go on your wall, stone carvings, some jewellery, pottery vases, artwork as well as handbags.

5. Santa’s Shop,  A good selection of clothes here catering to most sizes. The shop is at the north end of Garlic Lane, beach side of the street, about 5 shops before the end.  Look out for the colourful, girl’s fairy dresses hanging out the front.  Address is : 23 Sahaweda St (Garlic Lane), Legian  (Closest to Padma Street end).  Phone is 081 7473 3463.

It has been said that comparisons have been made between market stall shopping, via negotiation and market shopping, via fixed price shops with the fixed price shops winning hands down in the time stakes.  It is a wonderful option (and often a relief!……lol)  to have these fixed price stores to attend for hassle-free shopping.

Happy shopping!

Tres chic Pearl: a hidden gem!

PEARL Hotel, Legian

20130910-132423.jpg

Situated down a short driveway off busy Jalan Double Six, this charming boutique hotel is a delightful oasis of calm. There are only approximately 16 rooms wrapping around a modest azure pool in an intimate, tropical setting. Shaded day beds poolside, piled with cushions, are a restful place to relax with a cocktail or two.

The Pearl hotel has a NO child policy and there is NO swim up bar. This ensures a quiet and peaceful sanctuary.

20130910-132538.jpg

The hotel is conveniently located with the beach a pleasurable 5 minute stroll away in one direction and the wallet emptying shopping strip of Jalan Legian on the other.

I only stayed here one night as a last minute booking, but would happily return. The understated rooms are spacious and clean, though simply decorated. The bathrooms are generous, with some opening partially to the outdoors. Mozzies therefore can be an issue, so come prepared!

The gardens are pleasantly lush and typically Balinese.

20130910-132451.jpg

A simple, uncomplicated breakfast is included in the reasonable room cost. Breakfast can be delivered to your balcony, though there is no daily room service. Wifi is strong.

20130910-132525.jpg

Conveniently, the much coveted and well renowned French “Pearl Restaurant” is within the hotel grounds. An enchanting garden setting filled with fairy lights compliments the superb food with its outstanding presentation.

20130910-132517.jpg

I would recommend this hotel as a quiet, modest getaway. It is an ideal lady’s solo accommodation with secure, gated grounds and staff that are attentive and welcome you like family.

A little gem of a hotel!

HINT: Book an upstairs room if possible, as there is some noise on the ground floor from movement overhead.
